Situated in the North of Annapurna Himal and borders of Tibet (China) Mustang is the ancient and mysterious Kingdom of Lo Manthang. Upper Mustang trek is an ideal trek to observe Tibetan plateau and culture; visiting Upper Mustang is like visiting Tibet. The remote trans-Himalayan village even after its inclusion in Nepalese territory, entry was banned to foreign travelers till 1992.
Consequently, it drew much attention as a prohibited Kingdom. Since 1992 Nepal Government Department of Immigration started to issue special trekking permits to a small number of trekkers. This trek provides spectacular views of whitewashed settlements, ancient palaces and the simple monasteries in the rain shadow of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. It is home to wonderful landscapes and colorful barren hills holding interesting myths.
Upper Mustang Trek is also described as a mystique valley and the last forbidden kingdom; the windswept land of mountains preserving the last authentic remains of Tibetan culture. You can literally stand anywhere in Upper Mustang and take a picture and you are bound to get a beautiful picture for yourself; that is the beauty of Upper Mustang for you. The widely cultivated barley, potatoes, and buckwheat are the staple diet of the villages; through which our trek passes to reach the ancient walled fortress city of Lo Manthang. One can get to know the real lifestyle of Himalayan people who are not much in touch with the rest of the world. Usually, the culture here surprises travelers because they live in their own way and the most surprising thing is that all the brothers marry a single girl.
The Upper Mustang trek starts from Jomsom after taking a scenic flight from Pokhara. A special trekking permit requires to travel further from Kagbeni and to visit Upper Mustang one must be accompanied by a government-appointed official. Furthermore, we trek up the west side of the valley, with spectacular views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and the Annapurna crossing from the pass at 13,000 ft. Geographically, the trail is wide along the sandy riverbed filled with Saligrams (fossilized shell). Tserang is the second city of Mustang through which we continue our journey in the middle of some dramatic desert scenery of red and other fluted cliffs reaching ultimately to the mythical medieval walled city of Lo Manthang.
Upper Mustang, being in the Himalayan rain shadow, is one of the regions in the country suitable for trekking even during monsoons. During this time, the upper Kali Gandaki valley is still quite dry with only occasional rainfall.
